Delta jet full of passengers nearly collides with military plane at 800 feet

  • On Friday around 3:15 p.m., Delta Air Lines Flight 2983, an Airbus A319 with 131 passengers, two pilots, and three flight attendants, was cleared for takeoff at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for a regularly scheduled flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
  • Four U.S. Air Force T-38 Talon aircraft were inbound for a flyover of Arlington National Cemetery at the same time, prompting concern from air traffic controllers.
  • The Delta aircraft received an onboard alert of a nearby aircraft, and air traffic controllers issued corrective instructions to both the Delta flight and the inbound military jets to prevent a potential collision.
  • After receiving diversion instructions and maneuvering the aircraft as instructed, the Delta pilot asked, "Was there an actual aircraft about 500 feet below us as we came off of DCA?" to which the controller responded, "Delta 2983, affirmative."
  • The FAA intends to investigate the incident, which occurred two months after a midair collision above the same airport involving an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter that killed 67 people, prompting Acting Administrator Chris Rocheleau to state, 'We have to do better'.
