Firefox to Let Users Block All AI Features with Single Toggle
Mozilla will let users disable all AI features in Firefox 148, offering a single toggle to block current and future generative AI enhancements, fulfilling user demands for control.
- On Monday, Mozilla announced that Firefox will let users block all current and future generative AI features via a Block AI enhancements toggle in desktop browser settings, first rolling out to Firefox Nightly before Firefox 148 on February 24.
- Responding to user backlash, Mozilla said it built AI controls after hearing community feedback, fulfilling CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo's pledge to keep AI optional and restore trust.
- The controls let users manage five AI features, including translations, PDF alt text, tab grouping, link previews, and sidebar chatbots, with a 'Block AI Enhancements' toggle to disable all AI features.
- A Mozilla spokesperson told BleepingComputer that `When AI controls become available, the Block AI enhancements toggle will be off by default`, while some observers read auto-enrollment claims as incorrect since Mozilla clarified AI features remain opt-in.
- Mozilla said it will continue investing in AI while keeping Firefox optional to preserve user agency and framed controls as part of a transparency and trust push with industry partners.
