Mother who lost sight after birth has vision restored following plasma donation
Jessica Kent-Hazledine regained most of her vision after five plasma exchanges, and NHS Blood and Transplant says the service is now helping patients close to home.
- Jessica Kent-Hazledine, a 33-year-old dentist from Cornwall, has regained her sight following a plasma exchange treatment after losing her vision shortly after giving birth last year.
- Kent-Hazledine awoke two weeks after delivering her son with severely impaired vision in her left eye, then soon lost sight in her right eye, leaving her "terrified" she would not witness her child's growth.
- Medics at Royal Cornwall Hospital performed five plasma exchanges using the new Therapeutic Apheresis Services run by NHS Blood and Transplant, with Kent-Hazledine reporting vision improved by the third session.
- Kent-Hazledine now reports around 75% sight in her left eye and clear vision in her right, stating "It's been almost a year now, and my sight is so much better."
- Emma Warner, lead nurse at the Plymouth-based TAS unit, credits donor generosity for the recovery, while Kent-Hazledine urged those eligible to donate, saying "I'd urge absolutely everybody who is eligible to go and give blood or plasma.
