Shifting attitudes of frontline clergy revealed in landmark poll

  • Over half of Church of England priests support same-sex weddings and dropping the church's opposition to premarital and gay sex, according to a survey conducted by The Times. The survey found that 53.4% of priests are in favor of allowing priests to marry gay couples, marking a shift in attitudes over the last decade. Additionally, 64.5% of priests backed an end to the teaching that homosexual practice is incompatible with scripture.
  • The survey also revealed that three quarters of respondents believed Britain can no longer be described as a Christian country. Furthermore, two thirds of priests thought attempts to stop the decline in church attendance would fail.
  • 80% of respondents supported the appointment of a woman as the archbishop of Canterbury, and two thirds wanted an end to the system that allows parishes to reject female leaders. When it comes to slave trader memorials and statues, 15% of priests backed removal, while two thirds believed that information highlighting their links to slavery should be added alongside them.
