In 2023, 637,082 people died in metropolitan France, or about 828.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants – a historically low level, lower than in 2019. Behind this decline, however, is a contrasting observation: while cancers and cardiovascular diseases remain the main causes, regional disparities and places of death draw a more complex landscape.
