Morrisons U-turn at 13 stores after customers unhappy
The supermarket reversed a cost-cutting move after customer backlash, with five counters already reopened and eight more planned.
Morrisons is restoring meat and fish counters at 13 stores, performing a U-turn following significant customer feedback after previously scrapping 70 of these traditional Market Street counters last year.
Last year, the chain closed 52 cafes, 13 florists, four pharmacies, and 18 Market Kitchen branches to 'provide more product choice and improve the shopping experience' as part of restructuring.
Five locations have already reinstated counters, with eight additional stores confirmed to receive them; enhanced waste efficiency makes the counters viable again, and they will feature flatbeds and expanded grab-and-go selections.
Additional Market Street modifications include digital ordering screens at pizza counters and more prepared food options, while the supermarket evaluates further locations for future reopenings.
Separately, Morrisons revealed it will shut 100 outlets over the coming months, attributing the decision to rising costs from Government measures including increases to the National Living Wage and National Insurance.
