Morrisons Planning to Close 100 Stores in Next Few Months
The supermarket said it will try to move affected workers into other roles as it targets loss-making former McColl's branches.
On Thursday, May 21, Morrisons began staff consultations regarding the closure of 100 Morrisons Daily stores across the UK in the coming months, targeting loss-making outlets considered "the most challenged" within its estate.
These stores were acquired from McColl's in 2022, but the company stated that significant cost increases from government policy choices, specifically NIC and NLW, have made returning these locations to profitability difficult.
Affected employees face potential redundancy, though the supermarket chain plans to offer alternative roles within its supermarkets, logistics, and manufacturing divisions "where possible."
Expansion of the convenience sector remains a core growth strategy, with Morrisons currently operating around 1,700 stores while prioritizing new franchise openings to strengthen the estate.
These closures follow broader cost-cutting measures announced last month, including plans to reduce more than 200 head office jobs at Hilmore House, alongside recent restructuring of the convenience buying team.
