Minnesota’s Morris Day Drops Out of 'Trump-Backed' Great American State Fair
Day said Morris Day and The Time will not perform at the Great American State Fair after organizers listed them as June 27 headliners.
Singer Morris Day denied reports Wednesday that he and his band The Time will perform at the Freedom 250 "Great American State Fair" in Washington, D.C. next month, despite being announced as a June 27 headliner.
Organizers announced the 16-day event lineup for critics who contend it is linked to Donald Trump's efforts to influence the nation's 250th birthday celebrations, though Freedom 250 maintains the fair is nonpartisan.
Rapper Young MC also withdrew, stating he informed his agents that he would not participate, adding that "the artists were never told about any political involvement with the event."
Fans cheered the withdrawals, with one user giving "side eye" to the lineup that includes Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli, sparking questions about the fair's curation.
The 16-day fair runs from June 25 through July 10, though Freedom 250 faces scrutiny from watchdog groups regarding funding through public-private partnerships with various firms and federal contractors.
