UN Experts Urge Iran to Stop Execution of Woman Activist
More than 400 influential women and UN experts condemn Iran's death sentence for Zahra Tabari, highlighting Iran's record as the world’s top executioner of women per capita.
- On Dec 23, more than 400 prominent women, including four Nobel laureates and several former presidents and prime ministers, demanded Iran immediately release Zahra Tabari, a 67-year-old Iranian mother and engineer facing imminent execution.
- Tabari was reportedly handed a death sentence in October after what the appeal described as a sham 10-minute trial held remotely via video conference without her chosen legal representation.
- The letter was organised by London-based Justice for the Victims of the 1988 Massacre in Iran, and signatories included sitting judges, diplomats and US Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace, while PMOI told AFP Tabari was one of 18 activists on death row.
- Eight independent United Nations rights experts on Dec 23 demanded Iran immediately stop Zahra Tabari's execution, stressing the ICCPR restricts the death penalty to the `most serious crimes` amid procedural violations and arbitrary execution concerns.
- The joint appeal said the case laid bare the `terror` faced by women in Iran, calling it today the world's number one executioner of women per capita, while Norway-based Iran Human Rights reports more than 40 women executed this year.
