More than 40% of Canadian births had foreign-born mothers in 2024: StatCan

Births to foreign-born mothers reached 42.3% in 2024, offsetting a decline in Canadian-born births and preventing a natural population decrease, Statistics Canada reports.

  • On Thursday, Statistics Canada reported that in 2024 more than 40 per cent of babies were born to foreign‑born mothers, helping prevent a sharp decline in national births since 2010.
  • After a 2021 rebound, data show births to Canadian‑born mothers fell in 2022 and continued declining through 2024 during a period when the federal government expanded parental leave to 50 weeks.
  • The study notes a long‑term increase in births to foreign‑born mothers, with growth of 3.4 per cent in 2022, 8.9 per cent in 2023, and 11.7 per cent in 2024.
  • StatCan highlighted age‑specific patterns, noting 57 per cent of new mothers over 40 were foreign born and births to Canadian‑born mothers followed a different trajectory.
  • Looking at the longer record, StatCan documents that following almost constant annual declines until 2002, births grew through the period 2002–2009 before fluctuations, with the 2019–2020 exception coinciding with population growth low in 2020.
