More than 100 injured as wildfire rages near Marseille

BOUCHES-DU-RHONE, PROVENCE-ALPES-CÔTE D'AZUR, FRANCE, JUL 9 – Wildfire fueled by heat waves and strong winds injured 110 people and forced evacuations while disrupting transport and damaging over 60 homes, officials said.

  • A large wildfire spread rapidly from Les Pennes-Mirabeau toward Marseille on Tuesday, July 8, forcing evacuations and disrupting transport.
  • Strong winds and dry conditions fueled the fire's expansion across about 700 hectares, prompting authorities to close roads and suspend flights and trains.
  • More than 450 people were evacuated including two housing estates, firefighters defended a retirement home, and a hospital switched to generator power due to outages.
  • Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed around 400 evacuees, 63 houses damaged with about a dozen destroyed, and over 100 minor injuries as the fire remained uncontrolled.
  • Officials reported no deaths despite major damage and urged residents to stay indoors as containment depended on weakening winds expected overnight.
