Moneypoint to end burning coal after 40 years
KILRUSH, CO CLARE, IRELAND, JUN 20 – Moneypoint power station ends coal use six months early as ESB advances a multi-billion-euro plan to become one of Ireland's largest renewable energy hubs.
- After four decades of coal use, ESB ended coal-fired generation at its Moneypoint facility in County Clare on 21 June 2025, transitioning to oil-based power production.
- The transition follows a plan begun in 2017, including a 17MW wind farm and a 2021 multi-billion-euro Green Atlantic project to create a renewable hub.
- Moneypoint installed a €50 million synchronous compensator in 2022 to support renewables and signed a 2023 agreement to operate using oil from 2025 to 2029.
- The station, which supplied about 25% of Ireland's electricity at its peak, will operate less frequently as a backup for EirGrid, supported by 50,000 tonnes of oil storage.
- This shift marks a significant milestone in ESB’s net-zero strategy and maintains Moneypoint’s role in Ireland’s electricity security while supporting emission reduction targets.
