Police Stop HGV Driver on M18 After Swerving and Falling Asleep
Officers said the driver was swerving across lanes and had multiple energy drink cans in the cab before being processed for offences.
SYPA officers intercepted an HGV driver on the M18 after the vehicle swerved across lanes and the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, forcing an immediate intervention for safety.
During a recent operation, Roads Policing Officers patrolled the motorway network in an unmarked HGV cab; attention was drawn to the vehicle's erratic manner of driving as it swerved and crossed white lines.
While inspecting the cab, Officers discovered multiple cans of energy drinks the driver had used to overcome tiredness, and noted the driver was not wearing a seatbelt while driving.
Officers processed the driver for the offenses discovered during the stop. A SYPA spokesman said, "Driving any vehicle is a great responsibility, and you must ensure you as a driver are fit."
People think it won't happen to them, but Roads Policing Officers urge the public to help spread awareness about road safety, emphasizing that a single bad decision can mean life or death.
