Modi, Putin hold talks in New Delhi on trade, defence
The leaders are also expected to discuss a $100 billion trade target by 2030 and possible cooperation on defence, energy and critical minerals.
- On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held bilateral talks in New Delhi, pledging to deepen their "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.
- India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam starting Saturday, guided by the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." The expanded 11-member bloc represents around 49.5 per cent of the global population.
- Modi presented Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, an ancient Tamil literary classic, during their meeting. The leaders discussed strengthening defence cooperation, including potential Su-57 fighter jet supplies and BrahMos missile upgrades.
- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New Delhi to attend the summit, where discussions will address regional crises including the West Asia conflict and Ukraine. Modi reiterated commitment to ending conflicts through "dialogue and diplomacy."
- Harsh V. Pant of India's Observer Research Foundation cautioned that the bloc's expansion "looks like a big constraint" on consensus-building. India nonetheless aims to navigate this fragmented geopolitical environment by focusing on collective resilience in energy, food, and critical supply chains.
