Mithun Chakraborty Appointed BJP-Led Bengal Govt's Cultural Advisor, to Hold Cabinet Rank
The veteran actor will advise on information, culture and art matters under the state’s cultural affairs department.
On Wednesday, the West Bengal government appointed veteran actor and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mithun Chakraborty as a cultural advisor with the rank of Cabinet Minister in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced the decision during the foundation-laying ceremony for the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town, citing Chakraborty's contributions to the film industry.
Chakraborty, known as "Mahaguru" in Bengali cinema, joined the BJP in 2021 and became a prominent star campaigner using the one-liner "Ek chobol chobi" to energize election crowds.
Effective immediately until further orders, the role tasks Chakraborty with advising the government on matters concerning art, tourism, and culture, building on prior collaboration during Uttam Kumar centenary celebrations.
Currently in Alipurduar for a shooting assignment, Chakraborty thanked Chief Minister Adhikari for the responsibility, with sources in Nabanna indicating he will formally take charge very soon.
