Medication abortion restored in Missouri following court ruling
Planned Parenthood will resume medication abortions next week after the ruling, while state officials prepare an appeal to the Missouri Supreme Court.
On Thursday, Jackson County Judge Jerri Zhang permanently struck down several Missouri abortion restrictions, ruling they violate the reproductive rights amendment approved by voters in 2024.
The decision removes the state's 72-hour waiting period for abortions and allows broader access to medication abortions, unavailable in Missouri since 2018.
Judge Zhang upheld the requirement that patients have an in-person visit with a doctor before receiving medication, finding these appointments help determine if the procedure is appropriate.
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway condemned the ruling, stating her office will "expeditiously appeal" to the Missouri Supreme Court and calling the decision "exactly the Pandora's box we warned of."
Abortion access faces further uncertainty this November, as Missourians will consider a proposal also named Amendment 3 that would repeal the 2024 protections and ban most procedures.
