Missing hiker found dead: Gillam RCMP
Steffen Skjottelvik, 29, disappeared during a 300-kilometre trek along the Hayes River and was found after a 10-day search involving local communities and Parks Canada.
- On Sunday, Gillam RCMP announced the body of 29-year-old Norwegian hiker Steffen Skjottelvik was recovered on the banks of the Hayes River near where his jacket was found.
- On July 25 the hiker departed Fort Severn, Ontario with his two dogs, planning a roughly 300-kilometre trek to arrive in York Factory, Manitoba on Aug. 15.
- A helicopter pilot reported spotting a body, prompting Parks Canada and community searchers from Fort Severn to locate it at about 10:20 a.m. near where his jacket was found on Friday.
- The body was transported to Gillam and flown to Winnipeg for an autopsy on Monday, and Gillam RCMP thanked community members from Fort Severn and Parks Canada for their assistance.
- Missing for 10 days, the search ended with a body recovery; Manitoba RCMP said he was likely swept away by dangerous river currents while crossing and last transmitted GPS coordinates on Aug. 14.

Missing Norwegian trekker found dead near York Factory in northern Manitoba
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Paul Manaigre said he hopes the discovery can bring some closure to the family. It also marks the end of one of the most difficult search and rescue missions ever conducted in Manitoba, Manaigre said, where there was a good chance the man's body would never be found.
