Masked as RBI Officials, Gang Pulls Off Rs 7 Crore Daylight Heist in Bengaluru
Seven to eight suspects impersonated Income Tax and Reserve Bank of India officials to steal Rs 7.11 crore by intercepting an ATM cash van in broad daylight, police said.
- On Wednesday, police say a gang intercepted a CMS Logistics cash van near the Ashoka pillar around noon, posing as Income Tax and RBI officials to seize about Rs 7 crore loaded from HDFC Bank's J.P. Nagar branch.
- Impersenating central authorities, the suspects used a white Toyota Innova with a fake number plate and 'Govt of India' marking to stop the cash van, police say.
- Approximately 5 to 6 men alighted from the white Innova claiming to be RBI officials, forced custodian Aftab, gunmen Rajanna and Tammayya into the vehicle, transferred Rs 7.11 crore into another vehicle, then fled.
- City police mounted a widescale response and formed five special police teams, launching a massive manhunt with nakabandi, analysing over 50 CCTV recordings, and dispatching teams toward Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh after the Innova was last seen near Avalahalli.
- Investigators are probing why armed security staff in the van did not resist and why IDs were unverified, while company technicians checked the van's DVR and police interrogate Binod Kumar, van driver.
