Ministers to address Assembly of First Nations gathering in Ottawa
Ministers will discuss public safety, the economy and social services as chiefs debate 53 resolutions on rights, child welfare and status rules.
On Thursday, July 16, 2026, federal ministers including Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty, Trade Minister Dominic Leblanc, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson addressed hundreds of First Nations chiefs in Ottawa.
The Assembly of First Nations is a national advocacy body directed by some 630 First Nations chiefs who meet to determine policy direction on public safety, economic development, and social services.
Chiefs at this week's assembly are debating and voting on 53 resolutions addressing major projects, child welfare, Indian Act status rules, and calls for the Vatican to rescind papal decrees.
First Nations chiefs passed two resolutions on Wednesday committing to oppose any federal legislation or policies that dilute their rights or undermine their decision-making processes.
The gathering allows the Assembly of First Nations to shape its national agenda, with discussions focusing on major projects and community service improvements across First Nations communities.
