UNITED STATES, JUL 25 – Curtis International received 26 reports of fires and $700,000 in property damage from faulty electrical components in Frigidaire minifridges, prompting a recall for consumer safety.
- On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of approximately 634,000 Frigidaire-brand minifridges sold at Walmart stores and via Amazon, citing fire and burn hazards.
- Amid consumer complaints of sparking and overheating, the CPSC determined that internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite the plastic housing, creating fire and burn risks.
- Two consumers suffered smoke inhalation injuries, and the property damage exceeds $700,000, as reported by the CPSC.
- CPSC advises consumers to stop using and unplug the recalled units, cutting the power cord and labeling the door `Recall`, and to visit the recall website for a full refund.
- Manufactured in China and sold from January 2020 to December 2023, the units were priced between $36 and $40 and include models EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149 and EFMIS175.
