Millions of Chinese students sit for gruelling 'gaokao'
The exam includes Chinese, mathematics and English, with scores due later this month as schools tighten anti-cheating checks.
On Sunday, nearly 12.9 million students across China began the National College Entrance Examination, known as the Gaokao, with hundreds shuffling into testing centers in Beijing clutching pens and IDs.
The Ministry of Education states the Gaokao is the sole determining factor for university admission for most students, testing them on Chinese, Mathematics, English, Science, and the Humanities.
Student Zhang Xinnan admitted he felt 'a bit anxious' before entering the hall, while mother Deng Ju emphasized, 'Just perform normally; that's enough,' prioritizing her daughter's health over scores.
Education authorities remain on high alert, banning smart glasses and watches to prevent cheating, while exams this year feature topics on technology and an essay on Artificial Intelligence.
Attitudes are shifting as students and parents prioritize health over test scores; roughly one in six Chinese aged 16 to 24 are jobless, making the Gaokao's promise of university admission increasingly uncertain.
