A Ukrainian journalist is released from Russian custody in occupied Crimea
- Ukrainian journalist Vladyslav Yesypenko was released on June 22 from a Russian-controlled prison in occupied Crimea after over four years of detention.
- Yesypenko was arrested on March 10, 2021, charged with espionage and possessing explosives, which he denied, and his sentence was later reduced from six to five years amid global condemnation.
- During his trial, Yesypenko stated that Russian officials subjected him to electric shock torture to make him admit to charges falsely, and prosecutors conceded that the grenade found in his vehicle did not contain his fingerprints.
- RFE/RL CEO Steve Capus highlighted that Vlad suffered unjust treatment for over four years for charges he did not deserve and expressed gratitude to the US and Ukrainian authorities for their support in securing his release.
- Yesypenko's release marks a positive step in addressing political imprisonments amid Russia's intensified crackdown since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak expressing gratitude to all who helped secure his freedom.
