Military Overstocked on Training Ammo, Has ‘Gaps’ in Combat Munitions, Audit Says
A federal audit found that Canada’s military used only about half of its ammunition for training and exercises.
The audit linked unused ammunition to overstated requests and cancelled activities, while National Defence said tanks and ships were often unavailable.
Auditor General Karen Hogan said some excess ammunition could be used in an emergency, but not all training ammunition is lethal.
The military’s emergency stockpile has “significant gaps” between required and actual levels, and Defence Minister David McGuinty said the department is acting on the recommendations.
