Province to Blow Past Climate Targets, Internal Government Documents Reveal
Internal documents project 9.2 megatonnes of greenhouse gases in 2030, above the province’s 7.2 MT target and its path to net zero.
Internal government documents obtained by The Independent reveal Newfoundland and Labrador will emit 9.2 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, missing established climate targets.
Premier Tony Wakeham is scrapping the province's existing climate strategy to develop a new one, with Environment Minister Andrea Barbour announcing Wednesday that stakeholder consultations will begin soon.
The province's previous 2030 target was 7.2 MT, representing a 30 per cent reduction from 2005 levels; a megatonne equals one million metric tonnes of emissions.
Provincial NDP Climate Critic Sheilagh said she is "shocked and disgusted" by the projections, expressing concern that Wakeham's focus on expanding fossil fuel production will render the new plan inadequate.
A United Nations report released this month warns that the chance of limiting global warming to 1.5C "has been lost" due to insufficient mitigation, as heat-related deaths have "reached a record-high" of more than 500,000 annually.
