Mike Lawler Concedes Race to Cait Conley in NY-17
Conley won after ballot scanner problems delayed counting in Westchester County, where officials said about 250,000 ballots were still being tabulated.
Democrat Cait Conley defeated Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York's 17th Congressional District on Tuesday, flipping the swing seat after Lawler conceded the race.
Conley, an Army veteran and former counterterrorism official who served 16 years, campaigned on affordability and tied Lawler to President Donald Trump and Elon Musk throughout the race.
In the campaign's final week, 12 out-of-state canvassers sued Lawler's campaign in Manhattan federal court, alleging they were paid as little as $1 per door despite promises of $1,200 to $3,000 weekly salaries.
Voting in the district faced disruptions Tuesday morning due to a mismatch between printed ballots and machine technology, prompting the New York State Board of Elections to deploy emergency procedures.
During a concession speech, Lawler stated, "When all of the votes are counted tomorrow in Westchester, it's gonna be pretty clear that we will be short," expressing gratitude for serving the community.
