Speaker Johnson Won’t Stay On as GOP Leader After Midterm Rout
The move opens a House GOP leadership fight as Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan and Tom Emmer weigh bids after Democrats won the majority.
Speaker Mike Johnson told staff this morning he will not seek to remain House Republican leader following the party's significant election losses on Tuesday.
Massive election losses prompted this decision, forcing Republicans to confront their diminished standing as they transition to the legislative minority after voters rejected the party's agenda.
Republicans are scheduled to hold an internal leadership election on November 10. Contenders include second-ranking leader Steve Scalise, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and third-ranking Republican leader Tom Emmer.
Promising a 100-day agenda, House Democrats are focusing on lowering costs and protecting healthcare programs. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said they will work to deliver on the "dramatic change" that voters deserve.
The new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027, to elect a speaker and organize the chamber. Lawmakers also face a looming deadline next month if they fail to pass a funding bill to avert a government shutdown.
