NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — State-run television in Cyprus reported Monday that seven bodies have been recovered and two people had been rescued after a boat carrying migrants sank off the south coast of the island.

Six people died and another 40 are missing after last night's shipwreck of a barge with migrants 14 miles east of the Italian island of Lampedusa, Italian media reported.An Italian Finance Guard patrol intervened after the alarm launched by the European agency Frontex and upon arrival they found the barge almost sunk and were able to rescue 10 migrants and locate 6 dead bodies, but the survivors indicated that there were at least 40 missing.
