Mid Island’s largest bat colony totals 1,936 bats in 2026
Volunteers counted 1,936 bats, including about 1,810 little brown myotis, and said the colony remains a key benchmark against white-nose syndrome.
On June 10, volunteers counted 1,936 bats at the North Oyster Community Centre south of Nanaimo, marking the first survey of the season for the central Island's largest maternity colony.
The attic, renovated years ago for the little mammals, hosts the region's largest known maternity colony, which serves as an insectivore population helping keep mosquito numbers down.
Seven-Year-Old Cam Olson joined the volunteer group and used clickers to track bats exiting the attic and boxes, noting, "It was awesome," after counting over a hundred.
Despite a slight decrease, treasurer Kathy Doyle of the North Oyster Area Historical Society says the population numbers remain in the ballpark of previous years.
To protect local bats, Doyle encourages residents to clean their boots when returning to the Island, helping prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome.
