Mid Island’s largest bat colony totals 1,936 bats in 2026

Volunteers counted 1,936 bats, including about 1,810 little brown myotis, and said the colony remains a key benchmark against white-nose syndrome.

  • On June 10, volunteers counted 1,936 bats at the North Oyster Community Centre south of Nanaimo, marking the first survey of the season for the central Island's largest maternity colony.
  • The attic, renovated years ago for the little mammals, hosts the region's largest known maternity colony, which serves as an insectivore population helping keep mosquito numbers down.
  • Seven-Year-Old Cam Olson joined the volunteer group and used clickers to track bats exiting the attic and boxes, noting, "It was awesome," after counting over a hundred.
  • Despite a slight decrease, treasurer Kathy Doyle of the North Oyster Area Historical Society says the population numbers remain in the ballpark of previous years.
  • To protect local bats, Doyle encourages residents to clean their boots when returning to the Island, helping prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome.
