NHC Monitoring Three Areas in Atlantic for Potential Development

OFF THE COAST OF NORTH CAROLINA, AUG 3 – The low-pressure system off North Carolina has a 50% chance to develop into a tropical or subtropical storm by Monday amid marginally favorable conditions, the National Hurricane Center said.

  • On Sunday morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida said the non-tropical AL95 low about 180 miles off North Carolina may become a depression or storm today or Monday but probably won’t develop further.
  • The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30 and has produced three named storms, with none since Tropical Storm Chantal fell apart July 8.
  • The National Hurricane Center says this system has a 40-percent chance of cyclone formation within 48 hours and through next week, with slow development possible.
  • It could bring increased rainfall and rough surf to the Carolinas and Georgia, with minor coastal flooding, rip currents, and gusty winds possible by midweek if it strengthens, prompting residents from Charleston and Myrtle Beach up through Wilmington to monitor updates daily.
  • More updates and possible watches may be issued in the coming days, as the NHC says no other area in the Atlantic basin is likely to develop over the next seven days.
