Microsoft server hack hit about 100 organizations, researchers say

UNITED STATES, JUL 21 – The zero-day exploit CVE-2025-53770 allowed hackers to install backdoors and steal cryptographic keys, affecting mainly U.S. and German government agencies, banks, and universities, Shadowserver said.

  • Microsoft issued an alert on Saturday about active zero-day attacks targeting self-hosted SharePoint servers worldwide.
  • The alert followed a hacking campaign discovered on Friday by Eye Security, with the attacks exploiting an undisclosed vulnerability.
  • An internet scan with the Shadowserver Foundation identified nearly 100 compromised organizations, mostly in the US and Germany, including government entities.
  • Vaisha Bernard said the scan found victims before the technique was widely known and Microsoft urged customers to install security updates promptly.
  • The FBI is aware and working with partners, while the attacks demonstrate broad global exposure with unknown attackers, suggesting ongoing risk.
