Microsoft forms ‘Xbox Labs’ to explore game remixes, ports and other new frontiers
The small internal team will test AI ports, browser builds and modding tools as Xbox responds to a surge in game decompiles.
On Tuesday, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the launch of Xbox Labs, a new initiative dedicated to testing emerging gaming technologies including browser and Apple Silicon ports.
In recent weeks, games have been rapidly decompiled and rebuilt for hardware they were never designed to support, prompting Xbox to establish Labs and explore emerging player experiences.
Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support.
Sharma directed Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet to lead a small team of engineers and scientists tasked with turning emerging concepts into playable experiences for developers and players.
Leveraging 25 years of industry experience, Xbox remains committed to its core principles, the "4Cs," while Labs provides a way to explore new technology without abandoning existing work.
