Michigan Dealership License Suspended for Allegedly Selling Used Cars as New

The dealership violated probation and sold over 24 used loaner vehicles as new, resulting in license suspension until compliance is achieved, Michigan regulators said.

  • On Nov. 4, the Michigan Department of State announced a temporary suspension of LaFontaine Chevrolet Buick GMC of St. Clair, Inc. at 3050 King Road in China Township.
  • Following September 2024 warnings from MDOS and the Michigan Auto Dealers Association, the dealership accepted an Alternative Penalty Agreement with a $3,000 penalty and 18-month probation.
  • In a Sept. 24, 2025 follow-up, MDOS regulatory staff found more than two dozen instances of selling used vehicles as new, including a vehicle with 6,000 miles.
  • The dealership remains suspended and cannot conduct business until it reaches an agreement with state regulators, and consumers with complaints should call the MDOS Office of Investigative Services complaint line at 844-372-8356.
  • This marks a repeat enforcement action after LaFontaine Hyundai of Livonia was suspended last year; LaFontaine Automotive Group blamed a clerical error and cited confusion from state titling laws vs. automaker program definitions, Max Muncey said.
