Michael J. Fox honored at Emmys for Parkinson's advocacy
- On Monday, actor Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, marking only the sixth time in Emmy history the award honoring philanthropic efforts has been presented.
- Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at age 29 and founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research two years after going public in 1998. The organization has since funded more than $3 billion in research.
- Actress Julianna Margulies presented the accolade to her "dear, dear friend" from the legal drama "The Good Wife." The crowd gave Fox a standing ovation as he arrived on stage while "Johnny B. Goode" played.
- Linda Hope, chair and CEO of the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, stated the award embodies her father's legacy. She said Fox has turned his platform into "a powerful force for good" through his fight against Parkinson's.
- Fox aims to eliminate the disease "in our lifetime," he told T&C. He emphasized that the foundation must "throw the money at the right people" to advance breakthrough scientific discoveries.
