Golden Globes Rejects Michael's Submission to Compete as a Comedy/musical
The film will compete in drama categories after the organization ruled its songs do not meet musical criteria, Lionsgate said it may appeal.
The Golden Globes denied Lionsgate's bid to categorize the Michael Jackson biopic Michael as a comedy or musical on Tuesday, forcing the film into the drama category for the upcoming awards season.
Awards organizers determined the film's musical sequences function as re-creations of Jackson's performances rather than integral storytelling devices, failing the organization's requirement that songs propel the narrative.
Director Antoine Fuqua included a supporting letter with the studio's submission, yet the Globes maintained their precedent set by biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody, which also competed as a drama.
Slated for the drama category, the film starring Jaafar Jackson will compete for one of six available slots against major titles including The Odyssey and La Bola Negra.
Lionsgate has until October 31 to appeal the ruling, though sources indicate it remains unlikely before the 84th Golden Globe nominations are announced on December 7.
