Longtime Messi Friend Hoyos Unveiled as Inter Miami Coach
Guillermo Hoyos, a longtime Lionel Messi mentor, will lead Inter Miami on an interim basis as the club seeks a longer-term coaching setup.
- Inter Miami appointed former sporting director Guillermo Hoyos as interim head coach on Wednesday, replacing Javier Mascherano, who departed Tuesday citing "personal reasons" four months after winning the MLS Cup.
- Mascherano made his departure official on Tuesday afternoon. A source told ESPN he communicated the decision following a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls.
- The 62-year-old Hoyos previously mentored Lionel Messi at Barcelona's La Masia academy more than 20 years ago. Messi credited him with helping reach the first division.
- Despite their long friendship, Hoyos insists he will maintain professional boundaries with the Argentina striker. "Yet, that friendship does not mean that we can be right on top of him, constantly hovering over him, every single day," Hoyos said.
- Club sources told AFP that Hoyos is expected to remain in the role only until mid-year, with a new coaching setup planned by the Leagues Cup start in August.
