SAIC Plans to Build First EU Car Plant in Spain’s Galicia Region
The project would mark SAIC’s first European Union production facility and could create about 1,000 direct jobs, regional officials said.
Chinese automaker SAIC Motor Corp announced plans on Monday to build its first European Union car factory in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia, marking a historic landmark for continental European electric vehicle production.
Galicia's leader Alfonso Rueda gave the project strategic priority, with an initial investment envisaged at around €200 million to support the factory's development in the region.
Located in the port of Ferrol, the facility should create about 1,000 direct jobs and additional indirect employment while utilizing many locally produced components.
Construction should begin next year pending central government approval for foreign direct investment, with the plant becoming operational in 2028 if all necessary approvals are secured.
Several Chinese car manufacturers are planning production in Spain, with a Chery and EBRO joint venture launching in Barcelona by end of this year or early 2027.
