Metropolitan Police to resume arresting Palestine Action protesters

More than 2,700 arrests have been made since Palestine Action was banned as a terrorist group while the government’s appeal proceeds over several months.

  • On Wednesday, The Metropolitan Police announced they will resume arresting protesters for supporting the banned group Palestine Action, ending a pause initiated in February after a High Court ruling.
  • Although the High Court found the proscription unlawful, the ruling's impact is suspended pending the Government's appeal, meaning officers must continue to enforce existing law as it stands.
  • Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman said the force must "enforce the law as it is at the time," with support for Palestine Action remaining a criminal offence under the Terrorism Act.
  • More than 2,700 people have been arrested for expressing support for Palestine Action since the group was banned last year, with offences punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
  • Earlier this month, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring stated that trials for hundreds of accused protesters would be delayed until the High Court Appeal over the proscription is fully resolved.
