Instagram Introduces Instants, Meta's New Private Photo Sharing App
Meta says Instants lets users share unedited photos that disappear after viewing, while an archive keeps them for up to a year.
On Wednesday, Meta launched Instants, a new photo-sharing feature allowing users to capture and send unpolished, ephemeral images to Close Friends or mutual followers within Instagram and via standalone app.
Seeking to recapture organic social sharing, Meta designed Instants for 'unpolished moments' that contrast with curated Instagram content, targeting Gen Z users 2.5 times more likely to share photos with Close Friends than older users.
The feature prohibits filters or editing, allowing only captions, and ensures privacy by blocking screenshots while providing an 'undo' button for immediate retraction before recipients view the content.
Analysts suggest the tool mirrors features from competitors like Snapchat and BeReal, with recipients able to react via emojis or reply directly within Instagram Direct Messages.
Meta is currently experimenting with a standalone Instants app in select countries, while shared images remain archived privately for up to one year and can be compiled into recaps for Stories.
