Meta Reaches Out to Ex-Employee for Interview the Same Week It Laid Off 8,000 Workers: ‘We Will Cut You at Any Moment’
The company canceled 6,000 open jobs and reassigned 7,000 employees as it shifts spending toward a $145 billion AI push, The Wall Street Journal said.
- Meta initiated a fresh round of layoffs on Wednesday, cutting 10% of its global workforce to impact nearly 8,000 employees, while also eliminating 6,000 open positions.
- These reductions aim to offset the company's $145 billion investment in AI-focused projects. CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that "AI is the most consequential technology of our lifetimes."
- Simultaneously, Meta began monitoring the mouse clicks and keystrokes of remaining staff to train AI models. When employees asked if they could opt out, a Meta executive said no.
- More than 1,500 employees signed a petition demanding the company cease collecting their computer-use data. Chief People Officer Janelle Gale acknowledged the internal leak forced an early announcement.
- Affected staff will receive 16 weeks of severance plus two weeks for each year of employment, along with 18 months of COBRA health insurance. Zuckerberg does not expect further company-wide layoffs this year, though Gale has not ruled out future cuts.
