Melissa Becomes Powerful Post-Tropical Cyclone in Atlantic, NHC Says
Melissa caused over 50 deaths and severe damage in the Caribbean as a Category 5 hurricane before weakening over cooler North Atlantic waters, the National Hurricane Center said.
- In the final advisory Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center reported Post-Tropical Cyclone Melissa over the northwest Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.
- Following the major strikes in Jamaica and Cuba, Hurricane Melissa caused over 50 deaths and hampered rescue efforts, with rescue teams and officials struggling to reach marooned communities.
- About 520 miles north-northeast of Bermuda, Melissa moves northeast at 48 mph with a minimum central pressure of 973 mb; hurricane-force winds extend 105 miles, tropical-storm-force 275 miles.
- All watches and warnings have been canceled, but small craft advisories remain in place as dangerous surf and rip currents threaten the east coast of Florida through Friday.
- The post-tropical system is expected to gradually weaken but remain powerful in the North Atlantic through early next week, with swells impacting the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Bermuda, Northeastern United States coast, and Atlantic Canada.
