Five siblings between the ages of 1 and 5 lost their lives in a fire that broke out when an electric heater toppled over in Izmir. Initial investigation revealed that the mother, whose husband was in prison, had locked the door on the children and gone to collect scrap metal in order to make ends meet. In her initial statement, mother Melisa Sinem Akcan said, "I left the house to get the money for the scrap metal I collected."
Following the fire in the Selçuk district of Izmir in which 5 children lost their lives, the Ministry of Family and Social Services accused the Akcan family, stating that they refused to take their children under state protection.
