Brawl at High School Graduation Injures Child, Leads to Arrests
Police arrested two adults and three juveniles after graduation fights injured a 7-year-old and prompted backup from other agencies.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, fights broke out at the Dowagiac Union High School graduation ceremony at Chris Taylor Field, delaying the program.
Dowagiac Police Department officers requested assistance from neighboring agencies to manage the large crowd fighting near the bleachers, during which a 7-year-old sustained minor injuries though parents declined medical treatment.
Officers arrested two Dowagiac men, ages 20 and 21, on charges of assault and battery and disturbing the peace; three juveniles aged 15, 16, and 17 were also taken into custody.
Later, authorities responded to a related altercation on Second Avenue in Dowagiac, where additional arrests occurred as investigators continue seeking video evidence from witnesses.
Dowagiac Union Schools Superintendent Greg Blomgren stated the administration is working with police "so all individuals directly involved are held accountable for their actions and the disturbance.
