MEA coordinates with airlines to bring back stranded Indian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia

  • On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs said it is coordinating with airlines and tour operators to facilitate the early return of Indian Haj and Umrah pilgrims stranded in Saudi Arabia following flight disruptions caused by attacks on airport infrastructure.
  • AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi urged the Centre to intervene, claiming around 4,000 Indian pilgrims were stuck in Makkah and Madina after airlines suspended flights to Saudi Arabian cities due to the regional security situation.
  • According to the MEA, about 3,000 stranded pilgrims have returned to India on available flights over the past week, in addition to more than 10,000 regular pilgrims who traveled back on scheduled flights.
  • The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate General in Jeddah established 24/7 control rooms to assist citizens, following an attack at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam that left one Indian national dead and two injured.
  • "Arrangements are being discussed to facilitate the return of other Umrah pilgrims at the earliest," the MEA said, as officials continue engaging with concerned airlines and tour operators to address ongoing disruptions.
