McDonald's drone drop at Quebec maximum-security prison highlights contraband risks
Security cameras and counter-drone measures failed to stop the delivery, which left the inmate intoxicated and prompted calls for more prison investment.
Last Wednesday, a drone delivered a McDonald meal and alcohol to an inmate at the Regional Reception Centre in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., slipping through a broken window in the prison's special handling unit.
Security cameras and counter-drone technology at the maximum-security prison failed to detect the intrusion, according to the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, revealing gaps in current detection systems against newer drones.
Lebeau, national president of the Union, warned the incident signals broader risks, stating, "It's kind of a funny thing, the McNugget trio & but it could be worse. It could be firearm, it can be a ceramic knife."
Correctional Service Canada is implementing "physical mitigation measures" such as nets at the Regional Reception Centre, said Kevin Antonucci, designed to disrupt contraband delivery including drugs, weapons, and prohibited items.
Although extra outdoor patrols ended yesterday, Lebeau emphasized the federal government must increase funding for prison infrastructure, as a Correctional Service Canada spokesperson noted incidents "underscore the need for ongoing investment in technologies and infrastructure.
