Student who stabbed housemate 30 times admits murder
Coughlan changed his plea after prosecutors said CCTV and phone evidence showed a pre-planned attack and an attempt to hide the killing.
On Tuesday, 23-year-old Zack Coughlan pleaded guilty to murdering his 21-year-old housemate Jamie Collins at Bristol Crown Court after Judge Justice Linden ruled out a manslaughter defense.
Coughlan ambushed Collins in their Filton, South Gloucestershire garden on April 8, stabbing him 30 times after tensions mounted over rent disputes and differing political views.
Before the attack, Coughlan prepared a "killer kit" containing a 15cm knife, mask, and gloves; he later watched CCTV footage of the killing five times while cooking pizza and playing video games.
Judge Justice Linden will sentence Coughlan on Wednesday morning, as Collins' family stated the death "affected our family in a deep, profound, and lasting way."
Coughlan initially dialed 999 claiming he discovered the body in the rear garden; Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth noted investigation found no evidence supporting his claims of acting in self-defense.
