Mayor Bass Forces Abrupt End to MacArthur Park Immigration Raid
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, JUL 7 – A large federal immigration operation involving over 100 agents and National Guard troops targeted MS-13 gang areas, prompting Mayor Bass to demand the raid stop immediately.
- On July 7, 2025, federal agents along with more than 90 California National Guard troops carried out an immigration enforcement operation in a park located within Los Angeles' Westlake neighborhood.
- The operation came amid a month-long increase in ICE raids and the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and Marines starting in June, despite opposition from California officials including Governor Newsom.
- Roughly 100 federal agents, some on horseback and in tactical gear, paraded armored vehicles through the park while children attended a summer day camp, which prompted local activists and Mayor Karen Bass to condemn the action.
- Mayor Bass described the scene as a "political agenda of provoking fear and terror", demanded the federal agents leave immediately, and was assured by Chief Gregory Bovino that agents would be removed, though Bovino stated, "I don't work for Karen Bass."
- The show of force caused widespread protests and confusion but no arrests, reflecting ongoing tensions over federal immigration tactics and suggesting continued enforcement despite strong local resistance.
