Massive Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, Bridge, and Data Center, Regional Officials Say
The attack sparked fires at fuel and technology sites and cut electricity for about 20,000 residents, officials and analysts said.
- On Oct. 18, a Ukrainian drone attack struck Petersburg, hitting the Petersburg Oil Terminal and corporate data centers, according to witnesses. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed the municipality came under attack, resulting in blazes across four city districts.
- Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed that strikes damaged electrical distribution installations, triggering emergency power cuts that left 20,000 residents without electricity. The overnight assault also targeted fuel transshipment infrastructure across the region.
- Drone debris ignited a blaze at the Ruchyi fuel depot, holding 3,900 cubic meters of fuel, while a separate impact hit Ozon's 79,000 square meter logistics hub. A drone also struck a bridge 4.5 kilometers from the Petersburg Oil Terminal.
- In the Vsevolozhsk district, drones hit a VKontakte server data center, causing widespread connection outages across Russia. Municipal engineering teams were deployed to evaluate structural damage to transport arteries affected by the strikes.
- This incident follows consecutive strikes earlier this month that disabled Yandex data centers in Vladimir, Ryazan, and Kaluga, alongside attacks on a Sberbank facility in Saratov. The pattern indicates a strategic focus on Russian digital and logistics infrastructure.
