Massive North Slope oil rig that toppled near Nuiqsut remains unstable, officials say
The 9.5 million-pound rig spilled up to 4,000 gallons of diesel near critical wildlife habitat; responders face hazards from unstable wreckage and metal debris.
- Doyon Rig 26 toppled while being moved on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, about 6 1/2 miles from the Iñupiaq village of Nuiqsut during transport for ConocoPhillips Alaska.
- The module was being moved as part of a winter-exploration program and investigators say no definitive cause has been found, with temperatures around and above freezing raising local concern.
- Eight people, including two on the rig and six responders, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released; the state reported a maximum 4,000-gallon diesel spill while a fire was contained Friday evening.
- Doyon Drilling is leading response and recovery under a unified command with state and federal agencies, while ConocoPhillips said it will use a substitute drilling rig and maintain winter drilling plans.
- The spill zone lies within critical habitat for polar bears near a Colville River tributary, and last month Earthjustice filed a lawsuit while Ian Dooley warned of contamination risks as North Slope Borough raised community concerns.
