Massive Database Exposes 184 Million Login Credential Across Major Platforms and Governments

  • In early May 2025, cybersecurity expert Jeremiah Fowler discovered an unsecured online Elastic database holding more than 184 million records, including usernames and passwords from major companies and government accounts.
  • The database was found hosted on an improperly configured cloud platform and is believed to have been compiled through the use of infostealer malware that collects sensitive data from various global services.
  • Fowler analyzed a 10,000-record sample including plaintext usernames, passwords, URLs, and account types for services like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and government domains across 29 countries.
  • The database sized over 47 GB contained credentials for financial, health, and government accounts, and Fowler described it as "a cybercriminal’s dream working list" posing serious security risks.
  • After Fowler reported the exposure, the hosting company restricted access, but the breach highlights ongoing risks to privacy and the need for strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
