Australia bans a neo-Nazi network under new law that criminalizes hate groups
ASIO said the group likely met the threshold after it rebranded and continued activities that could increase the risk of violence.
On Friday, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced the neo-Nazi group known as White Australia has been officially listed as a prohibited hate organization, making membership and support a criminal offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess identified the group as 'stretching the boundary of legality' after members repeatedly 'phoenixed'—rebranding under aliases like the European Australia Movement while continuing hateful activities and avoiding scrutiny.
This designation utilizes tough anti-hate laws introduced following the Bondi massacre in December, making White Australia the second group banned under the framework after the Islamist collective Hizb ut-Tahrir was listed in March.
If the group attempts to rebrand, Burke warned the government can enact a simple regulation change to list them immediately, though authorities anticipate potential litigation over the listing's legality.
